Mahindra is all set to introduce the second generation Thar early next year. And the current gen Thar will be discontinued because it doesn’t comply with the crash test and emission norms. However, to embark the journey of rugged SUV, Mahindra will introduce a ‘Signature Edition’ to the Thar which will come in two shades – Napoli Black and Aquamarine. The latter colour is borrowed from the Mahindra Marazzo.
Mahindra Thar ‘Signature Edition’ will see ABS as a safety feature for the first time. Other features include new 15-inch alloy wheels, a special ‘Signature Edition’ badge on the front fenders bearing the signature of Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group.
Addition of new front grille in black along with a satin finish to the front bumper will be seen. Black decals on the bonnet lid can be observed to make the car look distinct from the on-going model. The interiors will more or less remain the same, however, new leatherette upholstery will be seen with the letter ‘Thar’ on the seats.

Things remain unchanged for the Mahindra Thar under the hood as it continues to get the same 2.5-litre turbocharged CRDe diesel engine. This motor produces a power of 105 bhp with 250 Nm of torque. It comes with a 5-speed manual transmission and gets four-wheel drive transfer with low and high ratios.
The addition of ABS comes as a safety measure after April 2019, but it will not be applicable for the crash test norms and will be only on sale till September 2019. Mahindra has also discontinued the 2.5-litre DI engine making 2.5L CRDe engine the only option to choose from.
Mahindra is already gearing up for the second generation Thar which will be bigger in size and also in terms of power figures. Reports suggest that the new engine could make a total of 120 bhp or 140 bhp. Also, Mahindra is expanding the Thar’s portfolio by adding a petrol engine at a later phase.
