PANAJI: Union Minister of State for AYUSH (independent charge) Shripad Naik on Sunday accused the Goa Mining People’s Front of ‘misleading’ Goans over the ‘assurance’ of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an early resumption of mining operations in the state.
“GMPF leaders had been pushing for an appointment with the PM, which we fulfilled… after meeting the PM they twisted the contour of the conversation they had with him at the meeting. The leaders of the mining front should stop misleading the people. If they start criticising and making allegations against those who are trying to resolve the issue then they have no right to demand or raise their grievances with us,” Naik said while interacting with media persons on the sidelines of a function held at Porvorim.
He claimed that on the day the Goan delegation, which comprised GMPF leader Puti Gaonkar and BJP legislators, met the Prime Minister a cabinet meeting of Union ministers had also been held in which Modi instructed the concerned officials and the ministers to resolve the issue.
Naik, however, did not reveal as what instructions were given by Modi to his ministers.
“The process has been going on… we should not expect everything to happen within a short span of time, as the matter has been going on in the Supreme Court,” he said, adding that the government and the BJP on their own have been pulling out all the stops for the early resumption of mining operations and not due to pressure from mining dependants.
It must be recalled here that on January 23, Naik had told media persons that national BJP president Amit Shah worked out a ‘solution’ to the mining imbroglio and that a decision could be out in next 15 days.
He had even claimed that the work had been going on for a solution, which would be announced at a press conference.
On Sunday, when the Union minister was pinned down on the promised solution, Naik denied making any such statement and said, “I never said that a solution has been found. I had said that we will work on a solution… I never mentioned about drafting work on any particular subject.”
He, however, reiterated that a solution to the mining tangle will be out by February 15.
