MARGAO: Margao MLA and former chief minister Digambar Kamat, on Wednesday, said that ensuring completion of the South Goa district hospital was more important than the third Mandovi bridge, and therefore, the BJP-led government should give priority to complete the hospital project that started in 2007.
Speaking to this daily, Kamat said, “I do not know why the government continues to neglect the district hospital work, the project that I started in the year 2007. There are two Mandovi bridges and the government has constructed the third one, however, it has totally neglected the district hospital. “The state of the Margao Hospicio hospital is worsening day-by-day. There are reports that patients have lost their life while being shifted to GMC because there are no adequate facilities in the Hospicio hospital,” Kamat said, adding, the money which the government has spent on construction of the bridge could have been utilised for completion of the hospital.
Kamat said he had proposed the project in the year 2007 considering the needs of the people of South Goa.
“But the government has neglected South Goa. If the Congress was in power, we would have certainly completed this project on priority,” he added.
He disclosed that the public undertaking committee, which held a meeting on Tuesday has decided to visit both the hospitals – the under construction district hospital and the Hospicio hospital on January 18.
Meanwhile, Congress workers led by party legislator Digambar Kamat on Wednesday held a protest over issues cropped up due to the traffic sentinel scheme claiming that citizens were facing unnecessary harassment as they were getting challans repeatedly.
Demanding immediate modification to the scheme, he said that “we need to study the scheme. This is something new that the government has introduced. We want to know whether private citizens can perform executive functions of the government.”
Congress supporters claimed that many of them have been issued multiple challans for the same offence.
“The challans are of six and more months old. We will find out whether the government can issue such backdated challans, since such a thing is not permitted in the electricity department where six months old power bills cannot be generated and issued,” Kamat
