PANAJI: The transport department on Monday cancelled the permit of a tourist taxi involved in a prostitution racket and directed the owner to surrender the permit within 48 hours at the office of the state transport authority.
The Calangute police on June 1 had busted a sex racket at Baga end point and arrested 24-year-old taxi driver Manjunath Belganoor and also seized the taxi used for prostitution. Police had also arrested a customer Kevinkumar Patel in this connection and rescued two girls.
Police said that taxi owner Shridhar Rout had lent his taxi to the accused driver to operate. However, the driver used the vehicle for immoral human trafficking.
The transport department issued a show-cause notice to the taxi owner on June 20 following a letter received from the Calangute police station to cancel the tourist taxi permit issued to Shridhar Rout on his Wagon-R (GA-03-N-9941) for using the vehicle in a prostitution racket.
During the course of hearing before the state transport authority, the taxi owner neither appeared in person nor submitted his reply. Hence, the authority, considering the seriousness of the matter and gravity of the crime, passed an order to cancel the taxi permit for violating Rule 22(7) of the Motor Vehicles Rules, 1991.
“The registered owner, Shridhar Rout, is, therefore, directed to park his vehicle at his residence and surrender the permit to the office of the state transport authority within 48 hours from the receipt of this order,” the order reads signed by director of transport Nikhil Desai.
