Minister for Town and Country Planning Vijai Sardesai, on Thursday, assured Cutbona boat owners of providing a “dedicated space” at the proposed new fish wholesale market.
While addressing the boat owners at Cutbona, on Thursday evening, the Minister for Town and Country Planning said that he would call a joint meeting with the Minister for Fisheries, director and other officials to resolve the long pending problems being faced by the boat owners.
Sardessai also assured the boat owners of looking into the issue of chapter cases being registered against the boat owners and initiating action if the officials involved found to have misused their position to harass the boat owners. He said that the new fish market has been proposed, and added that project will be taken up by taking the boat owners into confidence.
The boat owners will be provided space for parking and selling their fish directly, he added.
He said the market project will not only have parking space but also other facilities and added that inputs will be sought from the boat owners on that.
Earlier, Sardesai inspected the jetty at Cutbona and assured the boat owners of asking the GSIDC to expedite the jetty work ahead of the new fishing season.
Meanwhile, the Cutbona Boat Owners’ Union demanded that the operation of the jetty he handed over to the union, and added that if not, the fisheries department should take over the operation of all the jetties in the state.
During an interaction with the Town and Country Planning Minister, the boat owners asked him to find a long term solution to the wall training at the mouth of the river, the issue which is pending before the National Green Tribunal.
The boat owners also demanded a vigilance inquiry over the failure of the administrator in submitting the details of financial dealings of the Cutbona Boat Owners Co-operative Society for the last nine years, as they alleged “wrongdoings as credits have increased to over Rs 70 lakh in the absence of subsidy not being disbursed for the last two years.”
President of the union Savio D’Silva raised concern over the slowness in “transfer” of registration of boats.
D’Silva also raised concern on government’s decision not to allow more than two trawlers per family, and sought a review of some of the policies and schemes of the government which are affecting the fishing industry.
