Demanding thorough inquiry into the seizure of huge quantity of ketamine drug by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Pissurlem in Sattari, the Congress party on Wednesday sought action against those involved in drug trade.
“My party is concerned about the future of our youth. Drugs were seized in the premises owned by a BJP functionary. It indicates that protection is given to illegal drug trade and it is evident that no one is interested in taking action against illegal drug trade,” said Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco while interacting with media persons after meeting the Director General of Police Muktesh Chander.
The Congress delegation which met the DGP also included Thivim MLA Nilkanth Halarnkar, Santa Cruz MLA Antonio Fernandes, and several party office bearers.
Lourenco demanded an inquiry as to how 100 kilograms of ketamine drug got smuggled into Goa and how activities were taking in the particular premises which are owned by the particular BJP functionary.
“On one side, the Chief Minister has been asking people to give him the names of those involved in drug trade and on the other hand his party worker is lending his factory for carrying out the drug trade,” claimed Lourenco questioning the seriousness of the government in dealing with drug menace.
He claimed that the DGP told him that an inquiry which he conducted following allegations by Calangute MLA Michael Lobo that police offers were involved in the drug nexus revealed that no police officers were involved. “I am told by DGP that no police officers were found to be involved in drug trade, if that is so then who is right and who is wrong,” he wondered.
Nilkanth Halarnkar went on to accuse the Goa police officials of being involved in the drug nexus. He said, “Drug peddlers run their activity with the blessings of local intelligence branch staff of the police stations; we have asked the DGP to investigate mobile phone call details of these staff as they (police officials) are in touch with peddlers on a daily basis and collect hafta.”
Halarnkar also claimed that the police constables who are allegedly helping drug peddlers have made a fortune, own luxurious cars and behave as if they are holding posts higher than that of police inspectors and other superior police officials.
Party spokesperson Yatish Naik said that the quantity of the drugs found in the state and DRI raiding it also means that police has failed to intercept in its intelligence.
“How drugs come into the state? Who brings it in the state? And from where do the drugs come into the state? These questions need to be answered,” he said.
