MONTREAL (AP) Max Verstappen has posted the fasted lap in the first practice at the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix.
Verstappen completed the 2.71-mile (4.36-km) lap at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 1 minute, 13.302 seconds. That was 0.088 seconds faster than defending champion Lewis Hamilton in his Mercedes. Verstappen's Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo was third best, followed by Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas.
Hamilton is looking for his fourth straight and his seventh overall win in Montreal. The four-time Formula One champion leads this year's standings with 110 points in the first six races, 14 points ahead of Vettel.
Williams driver Sergey Sirotkin spun and hit a wall in the morning session, but was able to continue. Sauber's Marcus Ericsson also had a spin that left him facing the wrong way on the track, but he straightened out and resumed.
