PANAJI: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Wednesday directed the superintendent of Central Jail, Colvale to deposit in the court an amount of Rs 30,000 in connection with a petition filed by a then jail inmate.
The court has directed to deposit the amount within a period of two weeks.
According to the information, the money is pertaining to earned wages of the then jail inmate Rajesh Mishra.
By way of ad-interim relief, the respondents (state of Goa through the superintendent of Central Jail, Colvale) are directed to deposit in this court an amount of Rs 30,000 within a period of two weeks from today (Wednesday), the court has observed in its order.
The reason for grant of the aforesaid ad-interim relief is that there is apparently no dispute that the petitioner (Rajesh Mishra) was a prisoner serving sentence at the Central Jail, Colvale, had deposited earned wages amounting to Rs 30,000 with the respondents, the court has observed.
The court has observed that the conviction of Mishra was set aside and was acquitted by this court by order dated November 30, 2017.
Thereafter, Mishra applied for refund/release of the amount of Rs 30,000. To this, Mishra was informed that since the amount deposited by him was in “old currency” which has since been demonetised, it is not possible to refund/release any amount to him. At least, prima facie, such reason is quite unsustainable, the court has observed in the order.
