Griezmann celebrates his second goal against Marseille
Wednesday, May 16, 2018
Atletico Madrid finally got their hands on European silverware after a double from Antoine Griezmann and a late goal from Gabi gave them an efficient 3-0 victory over Marseille.
Diego Simeone’s men have lost two major European finals in the past four years, but were crowned Europa League champions in the rain in Lyon.
After Valere Germain inexplicably skied a one-on-one wide and over the bar in the opening moments, Griezmann capitalised on a mistake in midfield to calmly slot past Steve Mandanda to punish the Ligue 1 side.
The evening got even worse for Marseille, when former West Ham United man Dimitri Payet hobbled off the pitch in tears, to compound the agony for Rudi Garcia’s side after Griezmann’s opener.

And the France international, who may well have played his last game for the club amid rumoured interest from Barcelona, ensured the trophy would be heading back to the Spanish capital when he lifted the ball over the former Crystal Palace keeper.
And the icing was on the cake when Gabi struck home late on and Fernando Torres was given one final run out for his boyhood club.
STAR MAN – Antoine Griezmann
The France international was on another level to everyone else on the pitch and he showed exactly why he is wanted by some of Europe’s biggest clubs. If this was his final game before a reported move to Barcelona this summer, few Atletico fans would begrudge him the move. Skilful and strong on the ball, his movement and clinical finishing put him in the upper echelon of genuinely world-class footballers.
MOMENT OF THE MATCH
Scoring early against Atletico is the way to beat them, you cannot allow them to sit back and try to sneak a goal – especially with Greizmann on the pitch. So when Valere Germain was played in by Dimitri Payet in the opening moments of the game, his missed opportunity proved crucial.
The sentimental run out for Fernando Torres in his final ever game was also a bit of a tear-jerker; the boyhood fan captained the club at just 18 years old but is set for a move to MLS this summer.
