PANAJI: The state government scheme to make available coconuts at subsidised rates at the Goa State Horticulture Corporation kiosks has hit the bottlenecks. Though the scheme was launched with much fanfare on the first of this month, it has failed to reach the desired target.
Nearly two weeks after the scheme was launched, people across the state have been complaining about non-availability of coconuts at most of the GSHC kiosks.
To give relief to common man hit hard by rising coconut prices, the state government had launched the scheme through the corporation. However, the subsidised coconuts are not available even at those outlets where the scheme had been launched.
An official of the corporation has claimed that coconuts have been made available at 250 kiosks out of 900, but the people have maintained that they are not aware about the availability of the nuts at the kiosks other than the horticulture outlets at Altinho in Panaji and Margao.
Agriculture Minister Vijai Sardesai has admitted that there are still some issues as regards supply of coconuts, informing that he has instructed the officials to put the system in place within a week’s time.
“There are still some issues pertaining to supply of coconuts. Secondly, owners of the horticultural outlets are not ready to be part of the scheme on the grounds that they will have to maintain records of costumers, as the government has made LPG gas book mandatory to avail the benefit under the scheme,” he said.
Both the issues are being sorted out so as to provide adequate supply of coconuts at the horticultural outlets, Sardesai said.
Speaking to this daily on Tuesday, managing director of the GSHC Mhadav Kelkar said that there has been decline in supply of coconuts, forcing them not to supply them to all the kiosks.
However, he insisted that the subsidised coconuts have been made available at 250 outlets by the corporation so far.
“We have around 900 outlets all over the state, and we are trying to increase the supply of coconuts through various mechanisms,” he said, adding that only seven to eight farmers have been supplying coconut to collection centres.
The corporation is monitoring the scheme on day-to-day basis.
