PANAJI: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday said the Prime Minister’s Office has sought a comprehensive report on economic impact on the state following the Supreme Court order that has cancelled the second renewal of 88 mining leases effected by the state government.
“When the judgment about mining was pronounced, Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) was not in the country. But the very next day, I received a call from his office inquiring about the possible economic impact following the court verdict. They have asked me to send a report immediately, and if possible meet him (the Prime Minister),” Parrikar said at a function held at Kala Academy to mark the laying of the foundation stone for a super-speciality block at the Goa Medical College.
Modi has a soft corner for Goa, Parrikar said adding that the Prime Minister has never denied financial assistance to the state for any developmental projects.
Later speaking on the sidelines of the function, Parrikar said a report would be compiled in next 15 days after which it would be sent to Centre.
The report cannot be prepared in hurry without applying minds and taking all the stakeholders into confidence, he said.
When questioned whether the state government would abide by the top court’s order and go ahead with auctioning of mining leases, Parrikar said, “I will decide after taking all the parties into confidence including MLAs and stakeholders.”
He will hold a meeting with the MLAs from the mining belt on Wednesday to discuss the impact in their respective constituencies.
Parrikar said the government would take time to analyse the impact of the SC verdict on Goa, adding that there was no crisis because the mining operations can still go on until March 15.
“We will explore possibility of mining continuing till May 31 by way of e-auctioning of the leases and other ways so that current season is taken care of,” he assured.
The Chief Minister hinted that the government may provide relief to the mine owners and mining-dependants in the forthcoming state budget.
