Political angle in cannabis case should be probed: Shantaram

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Shantaram Naik on Thursday demanded that the police must probe the political angle in the cultivation of cannabis case which came to light on Wednesday at Candolim.
“Sarpanch of Candolim, Blaze Fernandes, and his partner Lenny Fialho have to spill the beans and inform the people of Goa, with regard to the politician who encouraged and protected him in the matter of cannabis cultivation,” said Naik while addressing a press conference in Panaji.
It may be recalled that on Wednesday bringing to light the poppy cultivation in the state, the Calangute police arrested two persons for cultivating cannabis plants and booked the owner of the property where the plants had been grown at Arrad-Candolim in Bardez taluka.
Even though Naik refrained from naming the Deputy Speaker and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, he indirectly targeted him and said, “In this matter, politicians including MLAs need to be questioned, and some of them (MLAs) claim that they are aware of the drug nexus. They even have knowledge of police officers involved in such activities, so the police should interrogate them,” he said.
Blaming the police machinery for negligence in detecting the cannabis cultivation, Naik demanded that Goa Police should immediately put details of the facts on the cultivation of Cannabis, as it would help in bringing in transparency in the investigation.
He further said that the state government while giving licenses to construct shacks, should also cover losses the shacks face due to natural calamities.
Reiterating that the party high command will take a final decision on the topmost job in the party, Naik denied that he lobbied for a second term as GPCC president while being in Delhi recently.
When questioned whether he wishes to have another term and continue to be the party chief or he wants a new and younger face to take charge, Naik said, “We have an AICC president who will take a decision in the matter. Whatever decision is taken by the high command is acceptable to me”.
