The Mahindra XUV500 is one of the most successful models from the home-grown UV manufacturer till date. The XUV500, thanks to its butch design, attractive prices, many features and decent off road capabilities, has managed to establish a really strong foothold in the ultra competitive SUV space. Until now, the XUV500 came with the 2.2-litre mHawk Turbo Diesel engine with two transmission options- 6-speed Manual and 6-speed Automatic. There’s even a 4×4 hardware on offer. However, the XUV500 finally gets a petrol engine to compete with rivals such as the Jeep Compass. The Mahindra XUV500 Petrol price in India has been kept at Rs 15.49 lakh (ex-showroom).

The new Mahindra XUV500 petrol is available only in one trim – G Automatic. The new model is powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk petrol engine that comes mated to an AISIN-sourced 6-speed automatic transmission. The engine outputs a maximum power of 140 bhp along with a peak torque of 320 Nm. In case you haven’t noticed, the power figures of both the Diesel and the Petrol mHawk engines are identical. That said, the company is about to launch a more powerful version of the Diesel engine. The new motor will debut with the launch of the Mahindra XUV500 facelift. The updated engine will output 170 bhp and 350 Nm. The new Mahindra XUV500 facelift is likely to get styling changes and updates to the interior.

The XUV500 petrol model is cheaper than the Diesel. It may be noted here that naturally aspirated petrol engines have traditionally been cheaper than their Diesel counterparts. THe new 2.2-litre Petrol engine is based on the mHawk Diesel engine. The fact that Mahindra didn’t require to develop this engine right from the scratch has furthered help it with saving money on the development costs of the motor.

The XUV500 Diesel has a 2.2 L mHawk oil burner that puts out 140 BHP and 330 Nm. The new petrol engine for the XUV500 is based on the same Diesel motor. The new petrol engine’s power output, at 140 BHP, stays the same as that of the Diesel. Its peak torque, at 320 Nm, is slightly lower. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The new engine variant takes the fight straight to the petrol variants of the Jeep Compass. Also, it may be noted that the Tata Hexa doesn’t have a petrol engine option. Hence, this is one area where the Mahindra XUV500 might be able to leave a dent in the sales of the Hexa.
Being a big displacement petrol engine, the XUV500’s gasoline-burning motor isn’t be too fuel efficient. We are expecting a peak mileage of around 11 KMPL.

There isn’t be a difference in the design of the Petrol and Diesel models of the XUV500. The only difference will arise out of the badges. However, the XUV500 is likely to get a facelift for both the petrol and Diesel engines. The facelift could come with a new front bumper and grille. The headlamps and tail lamps are also expected to receive some revisions. Also, there are high chances of the facelift coming with a new set of alloys and new paint options. On the inside, expect to see the inclusion of new features and a change in the general colour scheme.
