The Piaggio Group has come up with the new Vespa Red Edition. Basically, Vespa has joined hands with RED to fight AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis in India. The new Vespa Red Edition has an ex-showroom Rs 87,009 (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The renowned Italian scooter company will donate the money generated from the purchase of every Vespa RED to the Global Fund. RED foundation has partnered with companies like Apple Inc, American Express, Starbucks, Armani, and the Coca Cola company. Up to 50% of the profits earned from the sale of RED branded products go to Global Fund to help as many as 70 million people across the world. RED came into existence back in 2006 and was founded by U2 frontman Bono and activist Bobby Shriver.
Internationally, the iconic scooter manufacturer sells the Vespa 946 RED for this noble cause. The RED model on sale in India, however, is based on the VXL 125 variant. Speaking on the launch of the new Vespa RED edition, Diego Graffi, Managing Director and CEO of Piaggio Vehicles Private Limited (PVPL) said,”It is a matter of great pride for us to introduce the VESPA RED in the country. The iconic Vespa is a socially responsible brand and has always given back to society in supporting similar causes in other geographies. Through this association in India, we aim to provide an environment where people are better equipped to fight preventable and treatable diseases.”

The new 2017 Vespa RED Edition has gone on sale for Rs 87,009 (Ex-showroom, Mumbai). Compared to the VXL 125 trim, the new model commands a premium of roughly Rs 6,000. However, the fact that a considerable part of the profit will go towards helping the needy is nothing short of laudable. Also, the higher price tag can be justified through the bespoke RED paint job, red art leather seats and the 12-inch alloys.
Powering the new RED edition is exactly the same engine that powers the VXL 125 variant. This 125cc 3-valve, single-cylinder engine outputs a maximum power of 10.06 PS at 7,500 rpm and a peak torque of 10.6 Nm at 6,000 rpm. The engine comes mated to a CVT.
As the specs don’t see any change, even the mileage of the new RED model is exactly the same as that of the VXL 125. All this means that the scooter enjoys an ARAI-tested average mileage of 45 kmpl. Even in the real world conditions, the scooter can easily offer up to 42 kmpl.
The new 2017 Vespa RED Edition is based on the VXL 125 scooter and hence, shares almost all the body panels with the donor model. However, there are a handful of bits that give this special model an identity of its own. For example, this unique shade of red is exclusive to this scooter. Also, the new model comes with stylish 12-inch alloy wheels. In comparison, the VXL 125 gets 11-inch wheels. Also, the new scooter gets a red art leather seat upholstery. All of these minute changes come together to give this scooter its own unique identity.
As the new Vespa RED 2017 model is based on the VXL125, even its dimensions remain the same.
We are hopeful that the launch of the new Vespa RED Edition will help generate more funds for the noble cause. Stay tuned to Car Blog India for latest news updates on the Vespa scooters in India.
